May 17, 2017 House Majority Leader Caught on Tape, “I think Putin pays” Trump

The Washington Post reports that during a private conversation between Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy told his colleagues, a month before Trump cinched the GOP nomination that, “There’s two people I think Putin pays: Rohrabacher and Trump.”  The recording, which the Post obtained, showed that at this point, House Speaker Paul Ryan interjected and instructed the present Members to secrecy, stating, “No leaks…This is how we know we’re a real family here.”  While some Republican Members laughed, McCarthy added, “Swear to God.”

Rohrabacher, a California Republican, has been described by Politico in 2016 as “Putin’s favorite Congressman.”  As one of biggest Russia allies on Capitol Hill, who opposes economic sanctions against Russia, Rohrabacher received a warning from the FBI in 2012 that Russia was trying to recruit him as an “agent of influence” — a lawmaker whom the Russian government would use to influence U.S. policies to for the benefit of Russia.
