March 6, 2014 U.S. Imposes Sanctions on Russia

Between March 6 and December 24, 2014, the United States imposes a series of economic sanctions “on individuals and entities responsible for violating the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, or for stealing the assets of the Ukrainian people.”  As a result of the Ukraine sanctions, Russian money stopped flowing into the United States,  impacting Trump’s ability to sell U.S. property to Russian buyers and to finance future developments.  The sanctions, in effect, “cut off the oxygen” of Russian buyers trying to move money out of Russia.  During this time, Trump and the Agalarovs abandoned their plans for Trump Tower Moscow, although they continued to maintain a friendly relationship.
