July 2012 Michael Flynn Becomes Head of Pentagon’s Intelligence Operations

After a distinguished 30-year career in the U.S. military, including many years with military intelligence, Flynn, a three-star Army lieutenant general, is appointed to head the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA).  DIA is the U.S. Department of Defense’s counterpart to the civilian Central Intelligence Agency.  In his new capacity, Flynn, who has been described as “the military’s top spy,” is responsible for all intelligence gathering and analysis conducted by the United States military.  Flynn greatly expanded the Pentagon’s overseas clandestine (spy) network.
