Trump’s connections with Russia continue under Gorbachev’s successor, President Boris Yeltsin.  In early 1997, Trump meets with billionaire Russian artist Zurab Tsereteli and friend of Yeltsin, to discuss building a statue of Christopher Columbus, taller than the Statue of Liberty, at his development on the Hudson River.  The statue, “with 40 million dollars worth of bronze,” according to Trump, will be donated by the Russian government.  The statue ends up in Puerto Rico after several U.S. cities decline to accept it.
