1991 Collapse of the Soviet Union

In response to the democratic movements in Eastern Europe that effectively toppled communist governments in rapid succession, Mikhail Gorbachev attempted to reform the Soviet system by allowing multi-party democratic elections and creating a “mixed socialist economy” with some private ownership of industry.  Gorbachev’s reform of the Soviet Communist Party led to a failed military coup in August 1991 and ultimately the collapse of the Soviet Union.  The new country of Russia formally came into being on December 25, 1991.
